Waste Separation Behavior At Universities In Türkiye: A Conceptual Framework

This conceptual paper develops a theory-driven framework to explain waste separation behavior in universities in Türkiye. It draws on Behavioral Reasoning Theory (BRT) to map how sustainability and solidarity values shape “reasons for” (perceived benefits) and “reasons against” (perceived barriers) waste separation. These reasons influence attitudes toward waste separation, which then drive behavior. The model also includes green campus initiatives as a contextual moderator. These initiatives are expected to strengthen benefit-based reasoning, reduce perceived barriers, and tighten the link between attitudes and behavior. Building on this structure, the paper advances a set of propositions detailing (1) the effects of values on reasons for and against behavior, (2) the mediating role of these reasons in shaping attitudes, and (3) the moderating role of green campus initiatives in reinforcing pro-environmental behavior. By bringing together work from environmental psychology, sustainability management, and higher education, the paper makes three contributions. It extends BRT to a new empirical context, clarifies the cognitive processes behind waste separation, and shows how institutional settings shape pro-environmental behavior. It also offers practical guidance for university administrators and policymakers aiming to improve sustainability practices in Turkish higher education institutions.
